2025 | Updating the signs at Namur metro station in Montreal
In April 2025, the City of Namur updated and renovated the interpretive signs installed on the platforms of Namur metro station in Montreal, originally offered in 2017 to the City of Montreal on the occasion of its 375th anniversary.
Namur station in Montreal – why this name?
The station is located between Jean-Talon Street and Décary Boulevard. Historically, one part of the street was already named Namur, which was retained for the Montreal Transit Corporation garage located nearby. When the street was extended, it became Jean-Talon Street, but the name Namur was kept for the garage, and the metro station later adopted this name.
It is one of the few, if not the only, stations in the Montreal network to bear the name of a foreign city.
The signs on the platforms at Namur station
The updated signs feature three sections:
- Montreal’s 375th anniversary initiative (2017): the City of Namur wished to show Montreal residents why this station bears the name Namur.
- Namur, a French-speaking capital city: presentation of the city, the province, and its status as the capital of Wallonia.
- A nod to Namur in Quebec and Wisconsin: municipalities founded by immigrants from Namur in the 19th century, not to mention the twinning with Quebec City since 1999.
