‘Fleuves’, a work donated by the City of Namur to the City of Quebec in 2023

The video shows an artistic work donated by the city of Namur (Belgium) to the city of Quebec (Canada), as part of a cultural partnership. The work is on display at the Gabrielle-Roy Library in Quebec City.

Central theme :

The work is inspired by the rivers that cross the two cities:

  • The Meuse in Namur
  • The St. Lawrence in Quebec City

These two rivers symbolise the connection between the two French-speaking regions.

Artistic concept :

The artists used ‘progressive morphing’, a visual process to merge the two rivers:

  • Water flows were analysed over a 3-year period.
  • This data was compressed into a 3-minute animation, illustrating the fluid transformation from one to the other.
  • The aim: to show a visual and luminous synthesis of the two rivers, each contributing equally (50%), as a metaphor for the cultural link between peoples.

Symbolic message:

  • The project celebrates the friendship between Quebecers and Walloons.
  • It evokes the importance of international cooperation, especially in the face of today’s climate challenges.
  • The act of giving becomes a symbol of solidarity, humility and mutual inspiration.
