Description
The development of Namur’s role as a regional capital, combined with its urban transformation and cultural influence, enhances its attractiveness both nationally and internationally. In this context, the City regularly welcomes numerous official delegations. Namur’s International Relations Office ensures the organisation of these protocol receptions, whether they take place within the framework of its various international cooperations or in response to institutional visits and requests from partners in its ecosystem.
A key moment in this diplomatic hospitality occurs each year during the Walloon Festival. On this occasion, many members of the diplomatic corps stationed in Belgium are invited to Namur to attend official events organised jointly by the City and the Governor of the Province of Namur. These protocol occasions serve to strengthen the ties between Namur and the diplomatic representations present in Belgium.
Furthermore, the City occasionally awards the honorary title of Ambassador of Namur to individuals who contribute, through their actions, to the City’s international prestige. Two personalities have been honoured to date:
- Philippe Gustin, appointed Ambassador of Namur on 3 July 2014, played a crucial role in relations between Namur and Lafayette (Louisiana). Former director of the International Centre of Lafayette, he worked for several decades to strengthen cultural, educational, and economic exchanges between the two cities. An active figure in the international Francophone community, he was made a Knight of the Legion of Honour, and also received the National Order of Merit from France, the Quebec Order of Francophones of America, as well as the title of Knight of the Order of Leopold.
- Leonardo García Alarcón, choir conductor and artistic director of the Namur Chamber Choir since 2010, was awarded the title of Ambassador of Namur on 4 July 2018. Thanks to his talent and worldwide renown, he contributes to the prestige of the Centre for Vocal Art & Early Music (CAV&MA), positioning Namur as a recognised centre of musical excellence on the international stage.
